RICHARD

"Richard!" his mother said, poking her head into the coach house and making him jump, "I've boiled up a fresh bath for you. And I've taken some of your old clothes out. Leave those ones by the door, and I'll give them a good wash, then put them by the door, ready for you in the morning."

"Be careful with Ida's dress," Richard said. "It's delicate."

His mother just scowled at him. "Alright, I'll be careful."

And what that implied, he did not know. He downed the whiskey, passed the glass to his mother, and headed up the steps to the house, flush with nerves in case he might bump into Ida.

They should've just gone to an inn. Then, they could stay for as long as they needed. He wouldn't be able to handle one more night here. If he was by himself, yes, but…

No, there wasn't anywhere else to go. The Orc's Bouquet would've been too painful for her. The other inn was likely much the same, and noisy. And full of eyes.

And he didn't like traveling in the rain. That meant he had to put a tent up, and tents could be snuck up on. Even without one, they'd get sick as the rain poured on them, and regardless, rainfall masked footsteps.

He passed the little paintings on the wall—simple pictures of landscapes and castles, including one of Stonereach that looked nothing like it. It didn't have enough towers, and the ones it did were far too long.

He stood by the door, perking his ears for where she might be. In his bedroom upstairs? Waiting for him in the kitchen?

He entered the bathroom, tore off his clothes, shoved them outside, and then had his bath as quickly as he could.
